Indravati river originates from the Eastern Ghats of Dandakaranya range in Kalahandi district of Orissa and flows in a westerly direction, enters into Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh state. It again travels in the westerly direction and then in southern direction before  meeting Godavari River at the border of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.
The river during its course forms the boundary between the states of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh at various places. Most of the river course is through dense forests of Bastar. The length of the river is 535 km with a drainage area of 41,665 square km.
The Indravati is also known as the "lifeline" of the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh, one of the greenest districts in India.
